Fraud Costs

Fraud hurts everyone. Not just the insurance companies affected but every citizen. Some estimates indicate that insurance fraud in total costs $30 billion per year. Think about that figure and how it relates to other devastating costs. To put this in perspective some of our most costly disasters (prior to hurricane Katrina) cost less than fraud costs each and every year. Some reported that hurricane Andrew cost $30 billion. Hurricanes are predictable but not preventable; Fraud however is predictable and preventable in many cases.

Estimates of fraud costs just for vehicle and homeowners insurance premiums are $250 per year per household. Other estimates indicate that 15% of our Auto and Homeowners insurance payment goes towards paying fraudulent claims.

Sport compact vehicles continue to lead the pack in claims and thefts, costing the insurance industry millions of dollars each year. Questionable body shops contribute to millions of dollars in fraud, both directly and indirectly. Additional costs affect law enforcement in time and inflated stats as many of the reports for theft and vandalism are false. Fictitious claims estimates range from 10 to 25 percent on average and 50 percent and more in certain areas or classes such as the sport compact scene. This epidemic of false claims is fueled by the Street, Show, Drift, Drag and modified vehicle scene as depicted in recent popular movies which tend to glorify this lifestyle and culture.

We work with investigators throughout the world in order to predict and prevent upcoming scams. Prior to the Internet it would take 7 years for a theft trend to reach across the United States. With the Internet and today's mobility it has gone from 7 years to 7 seconds.

Latest Theft Statistics, by Mike Bender

Recent theft statistics from CCC are based on total loss claims received from more than 350 property and casualty insurers in North America. They compare the number of vehicles stolen and not recovered against vehicle registration volume information provided by R.L. Polk & Co., to determine the rate of theft.

The CCC reports the ten most stolen vehicles as follows:
2001 BMW M Roadster
1998 Acura Integra
2004 Mercury Marauder
1999 Acura Integra
1995 Acura Integra
2002 Audi S4
1996 Acura Integra
1997 Acura Integra
2001 Acura Integra
2000 Jaguar XJR

Once again, the Acura Integra dominates the list primarily due to the illegal tuner scene. For more information go to: http://www.cccis.com/ContentAction.do?topicId=1746

The Cadillac Escalade SUV topped the list of the most recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), which looks at the insurance theft losses reported for one- to three-year-old vehicles, or 2003-2005 models. This was the fourth year in a row that the Escalade has topped the list of vehicles most likely to have a theft claim. In fact, Cadillac Escalade EXT luxury pickup truck shows overall theft losses that are 16 times higher than the average.

Most Stolen for 2005, by Mike Bender

Eight of the top 10 most-stolen vehicles in 2005 were models of the Acura Integra, as reported by the CCC. They saw a big spike in the tuner market cars being stolen last year and there's been further movement this year.

In keeping with Super-Tuners and Bling, despite escalating fuel costs, the Full-size Utility vehicle segment, including the Cadillac Escalade, remains the most stolen vehicle segment. In addition, after dropping off the top five of most stolen segments for the year 2004, the Heavy Duty Station Wagon vehicle segment, which includes vehicles such as a Chevrolet Suburban or Hummer, has reappeared to take over the second-most stolen segment.

More information and a complete list can be found at http://www.cccis.com/

Street racing movies, accidents and fraud, by Mike Bender

On June 16th the third Fast and the Furious movie was released "Tokyo Drift". The film featured drifting and is sure to increase drifting on our streets. We had already been receiving reports of drifting related deaths, injuries and fraudulent claims, and we expect this to increase with the movies debut.

Historically films such as this inspire an increase in nighttime illegal vehicle activity. When movies such as the Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious were released there was a measurable increase in illegal street racing, accidents, fraud claims and numerous other related incidents. During the year the first Fast and the Fraudulent movie was released, 152 street racing fatalities were reported in the United States. A significant increase from the previous year.

Refer to the Drifting and Touge articles on this same page.

Red Flag Drift Cars, by Mike Bender

History is a good indicator of future trends. The latest installment of the Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift was released June 16th and we should pay more attention to collisions involving popular drift cars. The movie will feature a Mitsubishi Evolution IX with a rear wheel drive conversion; Nissan 350Z; Mazda RX-7, RX-8; Volkswagen R32 with a rear wheel drive conversion; Toyota Chaser; and Ford Mustang GT-R. As explained in the newsletter, additional cars to watch are the Honda S2000, Nissan 240SX, 180SX, Skylines and Silvias, and Toyota Supras.

Claims and crashes involving the following cars should be evaluated as to their possible involvement in Drifting: Nissan 350Z, 240SX, 180SX, Silvia, Skyline; Toyota Corolla; Ford Mustang; Honda S2000.
