Most Stolen Vehicles 2004, by Mike Bender
In 2005 the CCC Information Services Inc. reported that the Acura Integra was the most stolen vehicle. One out of every 200 1999 Acura Integras were stolen in 2004. Based on year of vehicle, the Integra made the top ten list 5 times; starting with model year 1999, 1998, 1996, 1995 and 1997. The reappearance of the Integra on the top ten stolen vehicle list was partly attributed to the resurgence in illegal street racing. CCC had reported the Saturn SL as the most stolen the previous year followed by the Integra.
Vehicles are also stolen for their parts. A CCC spokesman was reported as saying a 2000 Honda Accord LX cost $22, 365 new but would cost $68,065 if it were built entirely from Honda replacement parts.
The average age of a stolen vehicle in 2004 was 6.6 years. The average age of all registered vehicles on the road was 7.9 years.
Many states, counties and cities have their own lists on what is being stolen and where. Generally these types of lists are most current and reflect true theft trends. The Toyota Camry has been on the top ten stolen vehicle lists for years. It has been our experience that this is due to the ease in which an older Camry can be stolen. When we see Civics and Integra's on the list we believe the sport compact scene has fueled their thefts do to the heavy customization and need for replacement parts. Accords on the other hand were previously stolen for replacement body parts such as doors, fenders and hoods.
