Epidemic Theft and Fraud, by Mike Bender

Sport compact vehicles are disproportionately targeted for theft and fraud. The reason is simple: desire = demand = theft and fraud. Sport compact vehicle modifications are known to frequently be funded through insurance claims and/or stolen vehicle parts. Law enforcement, Insurance companies, and owners of these high dollar cars are tired of getting ripped-off.

Top Stolen Vehicles
The Acura Integra has been a popular car to modify for many years. The B18C1 series engine has been very desirable among tuners. According to CCC Information Services the Acura Integra occupies 6 of the top 8 stolen vehicles list for 2003. This made the Integra the most stolen make vehicle for 2003. Also popular among thieves were the Saturn and the Civic. Of the top 25 stolen vehicles only 4 were not sport compact cars.

Why are they stolen?
The Civics and Integras are many times stolen for their use in the Tuner scene. They are also frequently involved in parts theft and vandalism insurance claims. We have found that many of these claims are fraudulent. If someone wants a new paint job they 'key' their own car and make a false vandalism claim. If they want new seat upholstery they slash their original ones and make a false insurance claim. If they blow their engine while racing illegally or at a sanctioned race they may make a false auto theft report and then when the vehicle is recovered they will say the 'auto theft suspect' blew the engine.

Insurance Fraud
Many states have insurance fraud laws. Individuals that have made false claims similar to the above have found out the hard way that making false insurance claims is a serious crime and it is a felony.
